About the artist
Molly MacMillan
I'm a self-taught sculptor, from a line of wonderful creative people and artists in my family. Like many of us pursuing a creative passion, there are experiments, failures, classes and pivotal teachers along the way. But clay sculpture always remained the Holy Grail. From the time I felt those calipers on my face as a little girl when my mother sculpted my portrait, watching her mould it with those scary metal mould shims. We also had fibreglass fumes from the boat my father was building. Then there was the smell of oil paint and thinner mixed in with my little projects of the Creepy Crawly goo cooker and easy bake oven.
I work in stoneware clay, low fired with underglazes. They are finished occasionally with acrylic paint and black washes to highlight the texture. My sculptures are organic, colourful fantasies about nature and my life. Small scenes of forest animals caught mid-story, sometimes with a fairy tucked in or a face emerging from a tree. All about "what ifs."
Clay lets me see a moment from every angle and try out alternatives, the way a memory works. I might change direction mid-piece, layer in multiple thoughts at once, or just start over. While I'm still perfecting this memory skill, I'm hoping you can follow my progress.
I am just beginning my professional trek. I'm learning to show my work and hear what people say, good and bad, toughen up, find my confidence and carry on. Thank you for visiting my site.
